WHAT IS OSTEOPATHY?
"Osteo" is a form of manual medicine used to treat altered health states/specific conditions/impairments/injuries and their relationship to total body function.
The skilled practitioner uses a 'hands on' approach in assessment, including neuro-
orthopeadic testing, in the formation of a medical diagnosis.
Treatment is then based on this diagnosis and can range from subtle ligamentous balancing to more direct muscle stretching and joint mobilization.
OSTEO FAQS
WHEN SHOULD I SEE A OSTEOPATH?
Osteopaths treat a variety of conditions from all body systems/areas including the spine, joints, muscles, nerves, circulatory and other systemic systems.
Most people present to an osteopath with acute or ongoing pain, but it is not a requirement.
People often seek osteopathic treatment when feeling restricted in movement, unbalanced, tired, and stressed.
Commonly osteopaths are seen when more common physical therapies have provided limited relief due to their 'total body' approach.
DO I NEED A GP REFERRAL LETTER?
No – no referral is needed and most private health funds provide rebates for treatment.
If you wish to claim back the cost of your treatment through either the Medicare EPC program, Work Cover or Third Party Insurance, a referral from your nominated treating doctor is required.
OSTEOPATHIC PRINCIPLES
The body is a unit: the person is a unit comprised of body, mind and spirit.
The body is capable of self regulation, self healing, and health maintenance.
